InterviewLayton Stewart eager to learn from training camp opportunity
The 20-year-old striker has been in impressive form for the Reds’ U21s this term, scoring six goals and recording one assist in eight Premier League 2 appearances to date.
He also found the back of the net in the Papa Johns Trophy against Salford City in August and earned a first-team debut in the Carabao Cup tie with Derby County last month at Anfield.
The Scouser is now with the seniors for the current mid-season training camp and is eager to take on board what he can from those around him in Jürgen Klopp’s squad.
“I think the last few days have been good just getting used to the weather and getting the rust off after a couple of weeks and getting used to the ball again,” Stewart told Liverpoolfc.com.
“I think it’s a big opportunity for me to learn off the likes of Mo [Salah], Bobby [Firmino] and [Luis] Diaz. They’re players who play in my position, so I’m going to take as much as I can off them and try to put it into my game.
“It’s a great experience for us to come out here with the first team. Obviously there’s quite a few of us so we know each other and then we’re coming around the first team and trying to learn off them.
“The coaches have spoken about it – coming together, being around each other and doing things together.”
On his debut and the start to the season, Stewart reflected: “It’s been a positive season the first half [of the] season for me. I’ve scored quite a few goals for the U21s and obviously I got my debut for the first team, so it’s been good.

“It was something I’ve looked forward to all my life. It was a great moment for me and my family to finally make my debut, especially at Anfield in front of the fans.
“When I got back, I sat around with my family and spoke about the game and it sort of sunk in, but obviously it was a great moment for me.
“I had my injury that set me back quite a few months, I think I’ve got to strive to get more opportunities for the first team and try to show what I can do in the games that I get.”
