ReactionJoe Gomez on 'big run-in', offensive work and aspirations

The Reds kicked off a hectic month of matches with a 2-0 victory over Watford at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime, which saw Jürgen Klopp's side briefly hit the summit of the Premier League table.

Gomez filled in once more at right-back in L4, providing an inch-perfect cross for Diogo Jota's opener, before a late Fabinho penalty sealed the points.

Liverpool will now quickly turn their attention to the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Benfica on Tuesday night in Portugal, in what is the second of eight games this month.

Gomez says Klopp's squad will take the upcoming action in their stride.

The No.12 told Liverpoolfc.com: "It's massive. I think all we can do is give it our all and not see it like we have anything to lose, it's everything to gain.

"It's where we want to be, fighting for all competitions. It's not about overanalysing it, [it's] just taking it a game at a time and going for all of it.

"All we can do is focus each week on the games ahead. We know it's going to be a big run-in, hopefully with us being successful in all of them.

"So, we've all got to play our part to be ready and go again every few days."

On a pleasing win over the Hornets...

Everyone spreads out and goes all over the world, so to start with the early kick-off can be a pro and a con. But today we turned it into a positive [by] getting the three points. Everyone has done the best they could to achieve that, and the gaffer made sure we were on it.

On how much he has worked on his offensive game...

Yeah, I won't get ahead of myself, obviously I try to listen to the coaching staff and be in a position to support offensively as well. Today, Jots said to me in the dressing room [I'd get] an assist, so maybe he spoke it into existence. It's just about doing the best for the team and trying to work as a collective to get the three points, whatever the game requires tactically. Today there were opportunities out wide, I think we used it well as a three and that's all we can do.

On playing in the forward areas alongside a midfielder like Thiago...

It's a special team. Thiago is one of many, we [have] got so much talent in this team. Sometimes I don't see them [passes], even if you're receiving them, you just get surprised that he comes your way but that is one of his qualities, I think, breaking lines and advancing us, always looking to play a forward pass is one of his top attributes. We have such a strong midfield [group]. He just shows that today.

On trying to get back into the England squad...

Obviously, that's a goal of mine. [I'm] not looking too far ahead, but there's a World Cup this year and it's obviously a goal of mine to try to do all I can. I know the focus starts here, I can't think about the outside and so on. All I can do is try to apply myself here and hopefully reap the rewards of that. Of course, it is an aspiration, but the main thing is applying myself at Liverpool and seeing what comes of it.
