NewsJarell Quansah 'buzzing' for first experience with England seniors

After a breakthrough Liverpool season that saw the centre-back feature in 33 games for his club, Quansah was named in the Three Lions’ provisional squad ahead of Euro 2024.

He has now joined up with the group – which also includes teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Curtis Jones – with Gareth Southgate’s side to face Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland in friendlies before the tournament begins next month.

“I’ve been dreaming since I was young for this opportunity, so I’m buzzing,” said Quansah upon his arrival at the camp.

On receiving the call-up, he said: “[I told] my family [first] – my mum and dad – when I got the call. I was buzzing and they were buzzing for me. Probably crying, to be honest.

“I had a few holidays booked with [my mates] and I’ve had to tell them to go without me. They’re obviously blowing up my phone and they’re buzzing for me.”

England are in Group C at the Euros in Germany and will meet Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia during the opening phase.

Southgate, who must reduce his squad to a maximum of 26 players for the tournament, said of Quansah: “He’s had an amazing transition from a loan spell down the leagues last year and he has great attributes as a centre-back.”

He added: “I’ve said to these boys that we’re only taking 26. They might be ready now but it might be that this is brilliant experience for them for the future. I can’t give anybody any guarantees because we don’t quite know all the other injury situations.”
