Club'It's wonderful' - treble-winning pair added to LFC Legends Anfield stadium tour
The Scouser not only came through the youth ranks to achieve his boyhood dream of representing the Reds, but totalled 295 games in the shirt, winning trophies galore during his spell as a player and then coach with the club.
Lee and fellow 1984 treble-winner Mark Lawrenson are the latest legends to sign up to entertain supporters at Anfield as part of the exclusive stadium tour experience this season.
The Legends Q&A sessions have proved incredibly popular as Reds heroes from the club’s illustrious past reveal personal memories, dressing-room tales and humorous anecdotes.
After the 60-minute Q&A, fans will receive a signed souvenir guidebook and get to experience the stadium tour.
Lee and Lawrenson were both part of the 1983-84 team that won a unique treble as Liverpool clinched the First Division title, the League Cup and the European Cup - the latter after defeating AS Roma in their own backyard.
For Lee, the opportunity to meet fans remains a labour of love.
“It’s fantastic to be involved with the club once again, I’ve been asked a couple of times but the timing wasn’t right, but I’m really looking forward to this,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“We don’t consider ourselves legends but it’s just nice to be involved and speak to the fans. It’s always interesting to meet them and some of the questions they come up with are fantastic and it just shows you how knowledgeable they all are about the football club.
“I did live the dream and I’m still living it, to be perfectly honest with you. I’ve been very fortunate and to be a local boy to play for the club I’ve supported all my life and then coach later on was magnificent for me.
“I’m a fan myself, I go to Anfield to watch the team play and to be part of this Legends tour for the Q&A sessions is absolutely fantastic and a real honour.
“Liverpool Football Club remains and always will remain a massive part of our lives. For me to sit down with the likes of Ian Callaghan, Phil Thompson, Aldo [John Aldridge], Lawro, the names go on, it’s legendary and to be in their presence and reminisce about old times is just wonderful. It does keep us all young - well, in the head it does!
“I’ve also got to mention the wonderful staff involved in setting this up are just absolutely fantastic. The hours they put in, you talk about a labour of love for us, well, it certainly is for them as well and you see the pride in their eyes and how enthusiastic they are.”
Anfield’s stadium tour and museum experiences are among the city’s leading tourist attractions and were recently awarded a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award.
Recognised as being part of the top 10 per cent of things to do worldwide, the award is based solely on customer reviews and ratings collected over 12 months.
Last year, just under 400,000 people visited Anfield to go on tour behind the scenes.
New and updated content for this season includes audio guides for younger fans called ‘Kop Kids’, insights on the Anfield Road Stand expansion, which has increased the stadium’s capacity to 61,276 - plus a Premier League first with new sections on Liverpool FC Women, celebrating the incredible achievements and development of the women’s game to date.
Walk in the footsteps of LFC heroes past and present while enjoying free football-themed treasure hunts around the stadium, face painting, football skills sessions and an array of games and crafting activities.
Meet Mighty Red, the club’s official mascot, who will be making a special stadium tour appearance on August 21 at select times.
Lee and Lawrenson are back for their Legends Q&A session on August 24.
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, meanwhile, our summer Anfield Abseil offers a thrilling 100ft descent down the side of the Main Stand, one of the largest all-seater single stands in European football. This unique experience is available to visitors over 16 during weekends and weekdays. T&Cs apply.
All the stadium tours and experiences include a visit to the recently relaunched LFC Museum, which retells the club’s story in a brand-new, immersive way. As you walk through the interactive displays, you will travel through time, starting with ‘where it all began’ and ending with a tribute to former manager Jürgen Klopp.
As an added extra, each experience includes a free downloadable copy of ‘The Anfield Origins Tour’ - an external tour of the hidden history around Anfield and the stadium to be enjoyed at your leisure.
