The Reds recorded their biggest ever victory over their fierce rivals on Sunday, with braces from Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez and Salah followed by a Roberto Firmino strike.
Salah’s double carried him past Robbie Fowler to become the club’s highest ever goalscorer in the Premier League with his 128th and 129th.
Post-match, the No.11 and the captain, who made his 400th start for Liverpool, spoke to Sky Sports about a sensational afternoon. Read a summary of their reaction below…
Salah
On how special the day was…
It’s very special to win the game like that with that result, but at the same time I don’t want us to go to the next game with overconfidence. We just need to stay humble and play and win the game, because we are not in the position we wanted to be. But hopefully that gives us a good push and makes us keep winning.
On becoming Liverpool’s record Premier League goalscorer with his second strike today…
It’s very special, I can’t lie. This record was in my mind since I came here. I think after my first season I was always chasing that record. To beat it today against United with that result is unbelievable. I’m going home to celebrate with the family, have a camomile tea and sleep.
On the boost this result gives the Reds’ top-four chase…
Hopefully. I think now we are fifth in the table and three points behind Spurs; we have still one game in hand as well. We just need to enjoy the game and think when we play to enjoy the game, just to play our football. That’s what we showed in the last couple of weeks.
On whether he has a favourite of his 129 Premier League goals for the Reds…
It was the last one. I don’t think it’s a really great goal but I think it was really special.
Henderson
On it being Liverpool’s biggest ever win over United…
It was a fantastic day for everyone. I thought the performance level from every single player was top quality today, something we’ve been missing for a while of course but today you could see the energy levels and everything was back. To be fair, the last few Premier League games have showed with the results and clean sheets that we have kept we were on the right path, and today was a proper performance.
On if it’s difficult to take in the magnitude of the result…
It is a little bit because of how well United have been playing of late; they have just won a trophy the other week, which will have hurt us as a team a little bit watching them lift that and they have been doing really well this season. For us, it was just about today and about performing to the levels we’re capable of, and we managed to do that and the momentum kept building and we ended up getting seven. Like Mo said, we’ve got to take each game as it comes now. It’s a big win, of course, but we need to concentrate on the next one. I’m really happy for Mo because it’s not a coincidence that he gets these numbers. He dedicates his life to football every single day, how hard he works, he’s the first one in and last one out. It’s not a coincidence so I’m delighted for him.
