Programme notes'It would be amazing' - Niamh Fahey targeting first Anfield win

The Reds have lost all three of their previous Barclays Women’s Super League games at the club’s iconic home stadium but are determined to halt that unwanted streak by emerging from today’s 3pm BST kick-off victorious.

Captain Fahey writes in her notes for the official matchday programme: “It’s common knowledge that Anfield hasn’t been the happiest of hunting grounds for us over the years but we’d love to change that, starting today.

“It will be difficult against a strong Manchester City team but we are confident that on our best day we can compete with and beat anyone, so we have to be ready to fight and go after every ball and be clinical when we have our chances and see where it takes us. Winning three points at Anfield would be amazing.

“It’s such a big occasion to play at Anfield for fans of the club like myself, but you even hear those who haven’t grown up supporting Liverpool talking about what an experience it is to play here.

“We’re delighted to have three games here this season and everyone’s excited and really looking forward to it.”

Liverpool enter this contest with an unbeaten record in the WSL so far this term and with confidence enhanced by a hard-fought 3-2 victory at Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Having twice seen a lead eradicated that afternoon, the Reds dug deep and ensured three points courtesy of a 95th-minute penalty converted by Marie Höbinger.

Fahey adds: “Mentally it was draining with the game being so up and down emotionally, but it is always sweet when those games are in the balance and then you come away with the win.

“We also had two probable ‘Goal of the Season’ contenders! Marie’s free-kick was absolutely unbelievable and then Kappy [Cornelia Kapocs]’s first goal for the club was outstanding. I was delighted for Kappy to get her first league goal in such a way and it was pleasing to see Marie produce again because she’s such a technically gifted player.

“They were nice moments for the girls and then Marie obviously stepped up to convert the penalty late on and clinch a really big three points for the team.

“We’ve made an unbeaten start but remain slightly frustrated because we wanted to pick up the three points against Leicester and West Ham and we felt like we had the opportunity to do so.

“Therefore it was important to get that first win on the board and now we must try to push on again and get some consistency in our play for 90 minutes.”
