InterviewGrace Fisk on LFC Women responding, West Ham reunion and Roman Haug confidence
After a superb start to the new Barclays Women’s Super League season with wins over Arsenal Women and Aston Villa Women, Matt Beard’s side suffered a frustrating afternoon at Anfield last weekend with a 1-0 loss to Everton Women.
This weekend’s trip to West Ham is, of course, a swift reunion for Fisk, who departed the Hammers in the summer to join the Reds.
Ahead of the 3pm BST kick-off at Chigwell Construction Stadium on Sunday, the No.4 spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about the desire to bounce back from the Merseyside derby defeat, taking on West Ham and why she is more than confident Sophie Roman Haug will start firing goals in for the club…
On a week to reflect since the Anfield derby defeat…
We made a good start to the season after our first two games, but I think last weekend we just kind of lost our way a little bit with the quality of our play and we want to put that right this weekend. We’ve reflected on that game, so we are determined to do well on Sunday.
On the great spirit and determination in the squad to bounce back…
That is kind of what Beardy has been saying. We had a great pre-season and we had a great start to the season, so we can’t let what happened last week and the Continental Cup defeat at Leicester define us now. We are still a great team, we’ve got great connections on and off the field and it’s just about building on that and having the belief in each other and keep doing what we are doing.
On making a great start to life at Liverpool and looking like she has been with the club for a long time…
I’ve heard a few people say that, to be fair. It’s helped that the girls have been so welcoming from the start and I do feel like I’ve been here a long time. I think I’ve settled in decently and things are going well.
On a chance for the team to respond at West Ham…
We are looking to bounce back from last week and get three points on the board. West Ham have started the season well as well. They have played some top teams and picked up some good points. So it will be a good game and I’m sure both teams will be looking for three points, and we are eager to bounce back after last week.
On her return to West Ham…
That was my first professional club, I was there for three-and-a-half years, so West Ham means a lot to me and I still have a lot of good friends there, and my mum and dad will be at the game. So it’s a special place for me but I’m fully focused on Liverpool now and, along with everyone here, we are really determined to go and put a good performance in and get the three points.
On the Hammers having a new management team this season…
It’s completely new but quite a lot of players are the same, but they have completely changed the staff. They look comfortable on the ball, they are really disciplined and keep a good shape. It will be nice to see the girls but come three o’clock my only concern is three points for Liverpool.
On why Roman Haug will get stronger after her debut last weekend against Everton...
Definitely, we see it in training day in, day out how effective she can be, especially in and around the box. Obviously it didn’t quite happen for her last Sunday but we know and Beardy knows what she can produce. So we are excited for her to find her feet, get her first goal for the club and then kick on from there.
