AnalysisFive talking points as Reds finish league season with Wolves win

Liverpool 3-1 Wolves: Extended highlights

Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson saw the Reds come from behind to win, although it wasn't enough to overtake Manchester City in first place.

Here are five talking points from a drama-filled afternoon...

An heroic effort

You'll Never Walk Alone was sung at the final whistle as Anfield saluted and thanked Jürgen Klopp's men.

Liverpool fell just one point behind Man City but had produced a stunning run of form since the turn of the year to push Pep Guardiola's side all the way.

"We've given absolutely everything all season right until the last day," said Jordan Henderson.

Picking up the Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup along the way, the Reds have taken their supporters on an incredible ride in 2021-22 – and it's not over yet.

An already-memory-littered season finishes next Saturday in Paris for the Champions League final.

Of course there's disappointment on the league front, having come so close, but that blow can be softened with the chance to secure European Cup No.7 in a matter of days.

Up the Reds.

Salah does the double

The Egyptian was unable to start the contest but was given enough time to secure two prestigious individual honours.

The substitute's close-range finish to make it 2-1 – league goal No.23 of the campaign – won him the Golden Boot award, alongside Tottenham Hotspur's Son Heung-min.

Proving he's just as sublime at creating goals, too, Salah picked up the division's Playmaker award for the first time.

His 13 assists saw him finish one ahead of teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in those rankings, with Andy Robertson (10) tied in third.

The man for the final day

The player who finishes seasons strongly did so again.

By netting the equaliser, Mane became the first Liverpool player in over a century to score on the final day of four successive league campaigns. The last Red to do so was Ronald Orr, whose streak went from 1908 to 1911.

Mane has now scored six goals on the final day of the Premier League for the Reds – with three of those against Wolves.

Fortress Anfield

With the fans back in again, Liverpool were unbeatable at Anfield in the Premier League this season.

They were the only team in the division to go without suffering defeat at their home ground in 2021-22.

The statistics read as fifteen wins, four draws, 49 goals scored and just nine conceded.

This crowd and these players – a special combination.

Origi's ovation

Unable to play due to injury, the striker still received an emotional farewell from Anfield befitting such a club legend.

On what was likely to be his last day in L4 as a Red, Origi received a guard of honour from his teammates as he emerged from the tunnel for a special presentation.

So many moments, important goals and memories. Thank you, Divock.

"It's been an honour," he said in a direct message to fans. "I've enjoyed every single minute and still one more big one to come, so let's do it."
