Jürgen Klopp's verdict

The boss spoke to the media at Bramall Lane in his post-match press conference following Liverpool's 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

He said: "All respect to Sheffield United, they did really well and they did that over 95 minutes, that really deserves all the respect. But we had still big chances, I think nearly no-brainers, but that’s how it is… and then we had luck around the goal, that is clear. It was not our biggest chance in the game, unlucky for Sheffield United for sure. So if it would have been a draw I would sit here and say that’s how it was today, Sheffield deserved it and that’s what we deserved. I don’t think we would have deserved to lose but a draw was there if we don’t use the chances. But, with the goal, we got the three points and that leaves me pretty happy in the moment, obviously."

'The three points are all that matter'

Match-winner Gini Wijnaldum acknowleged Liverpool were not at their fluent best today, but felt they could take satisfaction in clinching maximum points against a spirited Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

He said: “In the beginning of the season it’s good if you collect as many points as possible because normally during the season you progress – so hopefully we’re not at our best now but at the end of the season we will be.

“That’s why it’s really good if you collect a lot of points right now and that’s what we’re doing.

“We didn’t start the game well. The manager showed us back what we did in the first half; we slowed the game down too much and that’s why they could stop our attacks. It was difficult.

“In the second half we tried to do it better but even then it was not the best game we had. But another win, that’s the most important thing. A few years ago we were struggling to win games like this. This season – and last season also – it’s going quite well.”

Salah pounces on a heavy touch from Stevens inside the area but clips well wide of the far post.

The words of Chris Wilder in his notes for the matchday programme.

The Sheffield United boss writes: "Liverpool is a fantastic, progressive football club from a technical and tactical sense. The way they move the ball around and win it back is reflected in their league position.

"Also, it should be noted that their players and staff's connection with their fan base is very good, as is ours, and we want that to continue."

Wilder also congratulates Jürgen Klopp on the 'magnificent achievement' of being named Best FIFA Men's Coach for 2019.

Sheffield United are back in the top flight for the first time since 2006-07. As they prepare to welcome the champions of Europe to Bramall Lane, their manager Chris Wilder wants this kind of high-profile fixture to become a regular occurrence.

He said: "Playing the European champions at home was always going to be one of those fixtures we were looking at.

"I want my team to be competitive as always, as we have been this season.

"But for me, this a reward for the club and the supporters who have followed their club through thick and thin. The long-term challenge is for this to be a regular fixture."

Sadio Mane and Divock Origi are in contention to feature in the clash after their injuries, while James Milner is also available despite the knock he suffered at MK Dons in midweek.

Xherdan Shaqiri is sidelined with a calf issue and the contest will come too soon for Alisson Becker, who could resume full training on Sunday.

For Sheffield United, captain Billy Sharp is ruled out through suspension and forward David McGoldrick is unlikely to play because of a groin issue.
