Ahead of Liverpool making a record 12th League Cup final appearance on Sunday, we are recapping their previous experiences of the competition's showpiece fixture - today's edition focuses on their last appearance back in 2012.

Liverpool’s first trip to the new Wembley ended in triumph with a penalty shootout victory over Cardiff City in the League Cup final - the last time the club won the competition.

Kenny Dalglish - in his second spell managing the Reds - had overseen wins against Stoke City, Chelsea and eventual Barclays Premier League champions Manchester City en route to the final.

Championship outfit Cardiff pushed the Reds all the way on the biggest stage, and even took the lead in the 19th minute through Joe Mason.

Liverpool eventually levelled on the hour mark when Martin Skrtel reacted fastest off a corner to poke the ball home.

Extra-time was needed as the two teams remained level and substitute Dirk Kuyt thought he had won the cup for his side when he scored in the second half of the extended period, but there was to be one final late twist.

The Reds failed to clear a Bluebirds corner and Ben Turner knocked the ball over the line to force a penalty shootout.

It couldn’t have started worse for Dalglish’s side, who missed their first two kicks from the spot, but they quickly recovered and then Anthony Gerrard - cousin of Liverpool skipper Steven - was left to take the crucial 10th penalty.

He dragged his effort wide to send the red half of Wembley into delirium, while Steven Gerrard consoled his relative before joining in with the celebrations.

Speaking after the game, Dalglish reflected: "Right at the beginning, when we went to Exeter City in the second round, we said we wanted to treat the competition with respect because, if we are doing that, we are treating the club with respect as well.

"We have come through some hard games and we came through another tough one today.

"I feel for Anthony Gerrard after he missed his penalty but, for us, we are delighted to have won the trophy. It's been a very good day for us."
