Happy birthday, Liverpool FC!
Liverpool Football Club officially celebrates its 123rd birthday today.
June 3 marks the anniversary of the day in 1892 that John Houlding received the certificate below, which confirmed the existence of a brand new team.
The events that prompted the foundation of the Reds actually began in March of that year, when Houlding and his close associates split from Everton FC and decided to form another club.
A different name was required for the new side, though it would remain at Anfield.
Houlding and his friends agreed upon their vision, beginning with the first rule: "That the club be called Liverpool Football Club and shall play under the Rules of the Football Association."
It was not until June 3, 1892, however, that Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited was formally recognised by the Board of Trade and the rest is history.
A total of 41 major honours have been achieved since - including 18 league titles and five European Cups - making Liverpool FC the most successful club in English football.
