The 11 biggest goalfests under Jürgen Klopp

After trailing by one at the interval, the Reds emerged from a frantic second half at Anfield with three points courtesy of strikes by Mohamed Salah (two), Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

The goalfest was nothing new for a team who have experienced more than their fair share of dramatic matches under this manager – mostly with success.

By coincidence, the highest-scoring fixture of Klopp’s reign so far occurred on this day in 2016, when Adam Lallana’s stoppage-time strike settled a frankly ridiculous contest with Norwich City 5-4 in Liverpool’s favour.

Here, we take a look back at those top 11 goal-filled games…

Southampton (A) – 6-1 victory – December 2015

Few would have predicted such an emphatic final outcome when Mane, then of Saints, put the home side ahead within one minute of this League Cup tie kicking off.

But Daniel Sturridge’s clinical double and Divock Origi’s first of an eventual hat-trick hauled Liverpool clear of their opponents by half-time at St Mary’s.

And they struck three more after the break, Origi bringing to mind that saying about buses by following up his first Reds goal with another two, and Jordon Ibe getting in on the act.

Norwich City (A) – 5-4 victory – January 2016

Klopp needed a new pair of glasses by the end of this Premier League clash at Carrow Road.

Liverpool led 1-0, trailed 3-1, went 4-3 in front and were pegged back again in stoppage-time – but exhibited the belief instilled in them by the boss in a sensational conclusion.

With loan recruit Steven Caulker deployed as an emergency striker, the Reds fashioned one last chance – and when Lallana dispatched it, there were chaotic scenes of celebration among the visiting team, staff and supporters which saw Klopp break his spectacles.

Borussia Dortmund (H) – 4-3 victory – April 2016

A new addition to the anthology of special European nights at Anfield had Dejan Lovren as its hero.

Klopp’s current and former teams were locked at 1-1 after the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final, only for Dortmund to stun Liverpool by taking 2-0 and 3-1 leads on Merseyside.

But famous comebacks against Saint-Etienne and Olympiacos were emulated in front of the Kop as the Reds levelled on the night and in the tie before Lovren leapt highest to head home a last-minute winner and set off an unforgettable outpouring of joy.

Arsenal (A) – 4-3 victory – August 2016

You don’t achieve anything in August but this curtain-raising triumph at Emirates Stadium on the season’s opening weekend proved vital come May.

A Liverpool XI containing summer signings Ragnar Klavan, Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum quickly clicked into gear in the capital and, after a second-half sucker-punch, led 4-1.

The Gunners landed responses through Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Calum Chambers but the Reds saw it out against a side they would overcome for a Champions League qualification place by one point at the end of the campaign.

Watford (H) – 6-1 victory – November 2016

Liverpool’s early-season form continued as they turned on the style to thrash the Hornets.

They notched three goals in each half at Anfield en route to an entertaining victory featuring five different scorers for the relentless Reds.

The happiest moment of all perhaps came in the last minute, Wijnaldum converting his first for the club since signing from Newcastle United the previous summer.

Bournemouth (A) – 4-3 defeat – December 2016

The only defeat on this list was an afternoon to forget on the south coast.

Things looked so promising for Liverpool when Mane and Origi each breached the Bournemouth defence inside the opening 23 minutes and, indeed, after Emre Can’s curler cancelled out Callum Wilson’s penalty.

A surge from the Cherries in the final quarter-hour, though, culminated in a last-minute winner for Eddie Howe’s team and nothing but a painful lesson for the Reds.

Maribor (A) – 7-0 victory – October 2017

The Reds, wearing the unmistakeable orange kit that became a lucky charm in 2017-18, set a new club record with seven unanswered goals at Maribor.

Never before in Liverpool’s rich European history had they registered an away win by such a margin in continental competition.

Firmino and Salah got two apiece, while Oxlade-Chamberlain bagged his first in a sign of exciting things to come from the England midfielder.

Spartak Moscow (H) – 7-0 victory – December 2017

Lightning struck twice in Champions League Group E as Klopp’s men booked a place in the last 16 with another seven-goal rout.

Spartak were on the receiving end of an electric performance by the Reds this time, with the display punctuated by a hat-trick from Philippe Coutinho.

Liverpool, who would of course go on to reach the final five months later, thereby topped the section with a remarkable goal difference of +17.

Manchester City (H) – 4-3 victory – January 2018

A modern Premier League classic saw Klopp’s Reds end City’s long unbeaten run in a meeting of two attack-minded juggernauts at Anfield.

The first half featured a more moderate pace than the second, when a nine-minute Liverpool blitz – featuring goals from Firmino, Mane and then Salah – established an unassailable advantage.

Pep Guardiola’s team came close as Bernardo Silva and then Ilkay Gundogan reduced the deficit, but too much damage had already been done by the hosts.

AS Roma (H) – 5-2 victory – April 2018

Liverpool took a huge step towards the Champions League final despite a late rally from their Serie A opponents, as Klopp’s team produced a trademark burst of power under the floodlights.

Salah was the modest master of his old club’s downfall with two first-half strikes past future Reds teammate Alisson Becker, before one from Mane and two from Firmino put them five clear.

A buoyant Anfield crowd was quietened to a degree when Roma struck twice in the last 10 minutes, but the advantage was firmly with Liverpool ahead of a return tie at the Stadio Olimpico.

Crystal Palace (H) – 4-3 victory – January 2019

Kopites heading to Anfield last Saturday would have wished for a rather more straightforward encounter than the one that ultimately meant a new entry into this list.

And while the first half was a disappointment for the fact their team trailed to an Andros Townsend finish on the counter-attack, nothing suggested quite what followed.

Liverpool got 2-1 ahead, Palace levelled. Liverpool got 4-2 up and Palace hit a third. But the Premier League leaders held on and Klopp meaningfully beat his chest in celebration.
