NewsFactfile: Six things to know about Sam Kerr
Here are six facts to know about the 25-year-old midfielder…
She is a Scotland international. Kerr has earned 32 full international caps after making her senior debut at the age of 20. Her sole goal for her country to date arrived against Northern Ireland in July 2023. She will be linking up at club level with an international teammate: Reds and Scotland centre-back Jenna Clark. “Speaking to Jenna, she said that the culture here and the team environment and all the players are so nice,” Kerr explained. “When I came in, I saw that for myself. That was a huge part for me and one of the main reasons that I thought it’s good to come here. So, thanks Jenna!”

And a multiple champion. Kerr is no stranger to trophies, having won five Scottish Women’s Premier League titles – along with a Scottish Cup and League Cup apiece – during spells with Glasgow City and Rangers. She also helped Bayern to the 2023-24 Frauen-Bundesliga crown in her debut campaign in Germany.
She boasts Champions League pedigree. Kerr has made more than 20 appearances in the Women’s Champions League across her time with previous clubs Glasgow City, Rangers and Bayern. She was part of the Glasgow City team that reached the quarter-finals of the competition in 2019-20.
And wins awards. Kerr was named Scotland’s 2022 Women’s Player of the Year and was voted into the PFA Scotland Team of the Year in back-to-back seasons, in 2021-22 and 2022-23 respectively.
She’s a ‘typical Scottish player’. That is how Kerr described herself upon signing for Bayern from Rangers in the summer of 2023. She said: “I’m an energetic player who gives everything for the team. I’m hungry, I work hard and like to get stuck in to every tackle. I’m that typical Scottish player.”
Sam has a well-known namesake. Of course, she shares her name with the Chelsea and Australia striker – and that caused a bit of confusion prior to her transfer to Bayern. She recalled: “I was just relaxing in my room and my agent called saying, ‘Bayern Munich have came in for you,’ and I said, ‘Are you sure they’ve got the right Sam Kerr?!’ That’s the first thing I said to him!”
