Diogo Jota scored for Portugal on Thursday to help them beat Turkey 3-1 in their World Cup play-off semi-final.

The Liverpool forward netted the second goal for his nation with a powerful header in the 42nd minute.

Otavio had opened the scoring at Estadio do Dragao in Porto, with Matheus Nunes then clinching the victory in second-half stoppage time after Burak Yilmaz had pulled one back for Turkey.

The victory for Portugal sets up an encounter against North Macedonia next week to determine who will progress to Qatar 2022.

In another play-off semi-final on Thursday evening, Neco Williams played the entirety of Wales’ 2-1 success over Austria in Cardiff.

Rob Page’s side will face either Scotland or Ukraine in the final, as the country seeks its first World Cup appearance since 1958.
