InterviewDiogo Jota breaks down his dramatic late winner against Spurs
The No.20 came off the bench and slotted an unerring 95th-minute finish at the Kop end that earned the Reds a 4-3 victory.
Sunday afternoon’s Premier League encounter began in stunning fashion as Jürgen Klopp’s team raced into a three-goal lead inside the opening quarter of an hour.
But Tottenham gradually forced their way back into the contest through Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and latterly Richarlison, who appeared to have snatched an unlikely point for the visitors with a header three minutes into added time.
However, Jota would have the final say 99 seconds later – and, post-match, the Portugal international offered a detailed breakdown of a moment he will never forget to Liverpoolfc.com…
Liverpool 4-3 Tottenham: Extended highlights
On what he remembers from the restart after Spurs’ leveller…
I remember Robbo telling me to go on because we normally play that long ball – to go on and believe, and you could feel that was already a good sign. We did that, we won the second ball, we played back, we played again in behind and I could intercept a pass and score the winner. It was amazing.
On his thought process as he bore down on goal…
It doesn’t require too much thinking. I think the moment there that I believed I could intercept was key because I started running in behind and I saw their full-back could pass the ball back. That was the key moment for me and then it was just, ‘Make sure you control it right and you hit the target,’ and hopefully it’s in – and it was!
On his song ringing out around Anfield afterwards being one of his best moments as a Liverpool player...
Yeah, for sure. In my first season I scored a few winners as well late but there was no crowd and everybody was telling me, ‘You should see it if this was full!’, the feeling, and I could feel that tonight. It was something special that I will remember forever.
