On this day: Ronnie Moran makes Liverpool debut

Ronnie Moran debuted for the Reds on November 22, 1952, in a 3-2 defeat by Derby County in a top-flight fixture at the Baseball Ground.

In a side also including Bob Paisley – who he would later assist so magnificently as part of the fabled Boot Room staff – and Billy Liddell, the 18-year-old left-back Moran made the first of his 379 appearances for the club.

Crosby-born Moran would go on to captain Liverpool and win Second Division and First Division league titles under the management of Bill Shankly during his 13 years as a first-team player.

Shankly then offered the man affectionately known at Anfield as ‘Bugsy’ a place on his backroom team and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.

Moran is a legendary figure at the club, fulfilling the roles of player, coach, physio, reserve-team coach, assistant manager and caretaker manager during 49 years of sterling service.

That near-half-century featured the amassing of 13 league titles, four European Cups, two UEFA Cups, five FA Cups and five League Cups.

Moran passed away at the age of 83 in 2017.
