Ian Rush wheeled away with his arms aloft at Old Trafford, having found the back of the net like he had done so many times before.

This time, though, it was different.

His side-footed finish past Peter Schmeichel and the Manchester United defence was Rush's 287th goal for the Reds and a record-breaking one.

It meant the Welshman overtook fellow legendary striker Roger Hunt to become the club's all-time leading goalscorer as he put Liverpool two up against their rivals on the day.

United would later hit back twice to salvage a 2-2 draw, but nothing could take away from the landmark for Rush and his watching family.

"It was such a great feeling to break the record, against Manchester United too, who had Peter Schmeichel – a top goalkeeper – in goal," Rush later recalled to Liverpoolfc.com.

"I knew if I scored then I'd break the record, and the reaction when I actually did it goes to show what it meant to me.

"My dad was a big Liverpool fan and Roger Hunt was his hero. So when he saw me break the record, he had tears in his eyes, which made it an even prouder moment."

Rush would go on to total 346 goals scored in all competitions across his two spells with the Reds, a tally that continues to stand alone unmatched for the club.
