MatchCup classic, assist hat-trick and Trent special – Liverpool's last five v Leicester
December 2021 – Liverpool 3-3 Leicester [5-4 pens] (Carabao Cup)
Liverpool’s most recent successful campaign in the League Cup included a meeting with Leicester at Anfield, in the quarter-finals of 2021-22.
The visitors raced into a strong lead inside the opening quarter-hour that winter evening as Jamie Vardy delivered a clinical brace at the Kop end.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain soon halved the Reds’ arrears, only for James Maddison to thump in a third for Leicester from long range before the interval.
Jürgen Klopp’s side refused to give it up, though, and half-time introduction Diogo Jota got his team back within a goal midway through the second period. Takumi Minamino then crisply fired in a 95th-minute equaliser at a now-raucous Anfield.
Momentum very much with them at this point, Liverpool were victorious in the penalty shootout – Caoimhin Kelleher produced two excellent saves and Jota coolly dispatched the winner.
December 2021 – Leicester 1-0 Liverpool (Premier League)
There was no such joy for the Reds when the teams met again in the Premier League just six days later.
King Power Stadium was the venue on this occasion, with Mohamed Salah seeing a spot-kick saved with 15 minutes on the clock.
Indeed, Klopp’s men found home goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel an impenetrable obstacle that night, denied in multiple promising situations by the Dane.
And at the other end of the pitch, Ademola Lookman burst into the Liverpool penalty area a minute before the hour mark and rifled in a finish that proved to be the contest’s decider.
February 2022 – Liverpool 2-0 Leicester (Premier League)
In the return top-flight encounter of the 2021-22 campaign, Jota was the Foxes’ nemesis once again at Anfield.
The Portugal international edged the Reds ahead with a poacher’s finish from a loose ball inside the box during the first half, and he then ensured the points with just moments remaining.
This time, Jota moved on to a clever pass into the area from Joel Matip and supplied an unerring strike into the net in front of the Kop.
December 2022 – Liverpool 2-1 Leicester (Premier League)
The sides renewed acquaintances back in L4 10 months later to bring the calendar year to a close.
Klopp’s charges fell behind before the fourth minute as Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall plotted a path through to goal and produced a calm finish to match.
But back came the hosts and they secured maximum points from the evening showdown as the unfortunate Wout Faes conceded two own goals in quick succession ahead of half-time.
May 2023 – Leicester 0-3 Liverpool (Premier League)
Liverpool arrived at King Power Stadium in May on a run of six consecutive Premier League victories – and they increased the tally by one with a commanding performance.
Curtis Jones snuck in at the far post to tuck home the breakthrough goal from Salah’s teasing cross during the first half.
And Jones almost immediately followed that up with his and the Reds’ second – a vicious, instinctive effort that flew in from the edge of the box.
Trent Alexander-Arnold wrapped up the scoring and the points in style in the second half by walloping an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner, as Salah claimed all three assists.
