InterviewCornelia Kapocs: 'We can take confidence from first St Helens win'

On Wednesday evening, Matt Beard’s side produced a clinical display to beat neighbours Everton 4-0 in the Women’s League Cup, earning a maiden victory at their new home stadium.

Kapocs enjoyed a fine game and netted her fourth goal of the season with a well-taken strike, while Mia Enderby stepped off the bench to score twice after Jenna Clark had opened the scoring.

It was a confidence-boosting result for the Reds as they look to end the calendar year on a high in front of their own supporters this week.

Third-placed Arsenal are flying high under interim boss Renee Slegers and head into this game on the back of Thursday night’s win in the Champions League away to Valerenga.

Ahead of Sunday’s 2.30pm GMT kick-off, read on as Kapocs speaks with Liverpoolfc.com about the last outing of 2024…

On what the win over Everton did for confidence in the group…

I think a lot. We really needed that win for the confidence and the feeling in the group. It was nice to get some goals and we had a lot of possession as well so it was nice. We could have got more goals as well.

On getting back on the scoresheet…

It was nice, especially after I’d had a few chances to get a goal. As a striker you always want to score to get your confidence and score goals. I was also pleased for Mia to score twice. It was so good from her [and] important goals for the team.

On a tough recent few weeks for the squad with injuries to key players…

Definitely and it has affected us but I think we’ve been working quite hard. We didn’t get the results we wanted in recent games and this win against Everton was very important for us.

On how settled she feels now at the club following her summer arrival…

I think I’ve been getting used to it OK. I really like the club and everyone around it so it has been easy for me and I enjoy it.

On the feeling she got from scoring an amazing goal away at Tottenham earlier in the season…

It was a very special moment for me and hopefully I can score a few more for this club in the WSL.

On the challenge of Sunday’s final game of 2024 against Arsenal…

I think it means a lot for us. Arsenal are a really good team and it’s a tough game for us but now we’ve got this first win at St Helens it will give us confidence to go out there and give them a good game. It was really important for us to get that first win at home and for our fans as well.

On how much she enjoys the challenge of playing against a side like Arsenal…

Definitely. I mean, that’s what you play for so I will enjoy going out there and playing against them and give them a game.

On her plans over Christmas…

We get some time off, which is nice. I will go home to Sweden and see my family, which will be nice to reset.
