The teams met on three occasions last season, with the Reds remaining unbeaten: both Premier League games ended 2-2 and Jürgen Klopp’s side won the Emirates FA Cup semi-final 3-2.
This is the second time the clubs have met in the Community Shield – City won the previous encounter in 2019 on penalties after Joel Matip had equalised Raheem Sterling’s opener.
This is Liverpool’s 24th appearance in the Charity/Community Shield, winning 10 outright, sharing five times and losing eight. Only Manchester United (30) have played in more.
The Reds have lost each of their last two Community Shield games, to City in 2019 and Arsenal, also on penalties, a year later.
Extra-time is not played in the Community Shield, meaning today’s match will go straight to penalties should the score be level after 90 minutes.
This is the second time Liverpool have played this fixture in Leicester – they lost 1-0 to Leicester City at Filbert Street in 1971.
King Power Stadium will be the eighth different venue that Liverpool have played at in this fixture, following Old Trafford, Anfield, Goodison Park, Filbert Street, the ‘old’ Wembley, Millennium Stadium and the ‘new’ Wembley.
Jordan Henderson could make his 450th appearance for the club.
