InterviewCody Gakpo: We're hungry for more and have to keep going

Jürgen Klopp's side have registered two victories on the bounce, over AFC Bournemouth and Newcastle United, after an opening-day draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds face Aston Villa next at Anfield on Sunday to conclude the first phase of the new season, with the September international break to follow.

Gakpo – who has featured in all three fixtures – has been encouraged by what he has seen from the team so far, having secured both of their wins despite being reduced to 10 men in each.

"I think we did quite well," the No.18 told Liverpoolfc.com. "Of course, there's room for improvement, but to get a point at Stamford Bridge, even though we could've won the game, is still something to work with.

"And then two wins in a row is great, especially the last one [at Newcastle], it was really nice, [but] we have to keep working and keep winning."

He added: "The mood was good, of course, but I think everybody realises it's just the beginning of the season and we have to keep going.

"It's not like we won two games and it's done. We have to keep going and we are hungry for more."

On the dramatic victory at Newcastle, achieved with 10 men, last weekend…

It was really crazy! I think we deserved it as well. We played really good, even though we were down with one player. We tried to keep calm, stay calm on the ball and at the end we got some spaces and then we've got Darwin, who was on his bike and shot two wonderful goals. We were really happy.

On his versatility, being able to play as a No.8, No.9 and winger…

I think it's helpful for me and also for the team when it's needed, but I think at the end it's just about what is the best for the team to win the game. I think I played now in the eight and the nine. It's just for me to improve in both positions. Obviously I played last season a lot as a nine, so that's where I'm a little bit more used to playing. As an eight as well I can improve and then I can help the team more.

On returning to Anfield on Sunday against Villa…

Every time it's amazing. I think the fans are wonderful. They are so important to us, like you saw in the last home game. We were down with one goal and they just were trying to push us to get the equaliser and then eventually we won. It's also because of them [that we won], so we have to give them more wins back. It's a good team [Aston Villa], but we are as well. We have to just be ready and give it our best.
