ReactionCody Gakpo: Very happy with the goals and really proud of the team
The Netherlands forward dispatched two emphatic finishes in the second half at Amex Stadium on Wednesday night to put the Reds in command.
Responses from Simon Adingra and Tariq Lamptey sandwiched Luis Diaz’s near-post strike as the Seagulls kept the game alive late on, but Arne Slot’s side – who had begun the tie with eight changes to the XI from last weekend – secured the victory.
Gakpo, who also netted twice in the previous round against West Ham United, gave his post-match verdict to Sky Sports. Read his reaction below…
On his happiness with the night’s work…
Yeah, overall I think the most important [thing] is that we won here, and that’s what we did. A tough opponent, a lot of quality. But we showed great character today and I think it was a good game to watch.
On being proud of his two finishes…
I think two good goals, but I think maybe it should have been more or get an assist as well. But at the end, very happy with the goals as well.
On the contribution of Liverpool’s young players to the game…
Very good, very good. Tyler Morton started, he didn’t start that often. Trey [Nyoni] came in late on, and the goalie [Vitezslav Jaros] obviously. I think they did fantastic, so very proud of them as well. Proud of the whole team. It’s not always easy if you don’t play that much and then all of a sudden you need to play a game; for example, Conor [Bradley] was a little bit injured, back directly and playing 90 minutes. Everybody did well so really proud of them and really proud of the team.
On wanting to continue the run in the Carabao Cup…
Obviously every competition you play in you want to win. This one as well, so very happy that we went through and onto the next.
