MatchChelsea v Liverpool: 18 stats to know about the Carabao Cup final

Liverpool take on Chelsea in a 3pm GMT kick-off in the capital, a repeat of a clash the Reds won on penalties two years ago.

Chelsea and Liverpool have met in two previous League Cup finals (2005 and 2022) and two previous FA Cup finals (2012 and 2022). This will be the first fixture to have been played in five different major domestic finals in English football history.

Liverpool are making their 14th appearance in the League Cup final.

This is their 44th appearance at Wembley, with 22 wins to date.

The Reds are aiming to lift the trophy for a record 10th time, which would put them two successes ahead of Manchester City.

Of Liverpool’s nine previous League Cup final victories, only two were achieved inside 90 minutes (against Bolton Wanderers in 1995 and Manchester United in 2003). The other seven required extra-time, penalty shootouts or replays.

The Reds have scored the fastest ever goal in this fixture, and it came against Chelsea. John Arne Riise struck after just 45 seconds in the 2005 showpiece, though the Blues won 3-2 after extra-time.

Jürgen Klopp’s men are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Chelsea in all competitions, since a 1-0 league defeat at Anfield in March 2021.

The Reds have also kept four clean sheets in the last six encounters.

Klopp could become the third Liverpool manager to win the trophy on more than one occasion. Bob Paisley won three and Gerard Houllier two.

Cody Gakpo has scored in every round of this season’s competition so far.

The Reds have won all four of their penalty shootouts versus Chelsea – in the 2007 Champions League semi-final, 2019 UEFA Super Cup, and the Carabao Cup and Emirates FA Cup finals of 2022.

Luis Diaz could become only the third Liverpool player in history to score against Chelsea in three different games in the same season, following Roger Hunt in 1965-66 and Kenny Dalglish in 1977-78.

Only three substitutes have scored for the Reds in a Wembley final: Ian Rush (two) in the 1989 FA Cup, Dirk Kuyt in the 2012 League Cup, and Andy Carroll in the 2012 FA Cup.

Klopp has lost just one of his 13 games against Mauricio Pochettino in his managerial career (won seven, drawn five).

Chelsea have won the League Cup on five occasions, the last time being in 2015 against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues are the only team to prevent Liverpool from scoring in their last 12 Wembley visits – doing so twice.

Pochettino’s side reached the final by beating AFC Wimbledon, Brighton & Hove Albion, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough.

In 34 games in all competitions under Pochettino so far, Chelsea have won 17 times, drawn six and lost 11.
