Andrew Stanley Devine awarded Freedom of the City of Liverpool at ceremony

His family accepted the status at a private ceremony at Liverpool Town Hall on what would have been Andrew's 56th birthday.

Andrew suffered life-changing injuries at the Hillsborough disaster on April 15, 1989 and sadly passed away in July 2021 at the age of 55.

Coroner Mr Andre Rebello ruled Andrew was unlawfully killed, making him the 97th fatality of the tragic events during Liverpool's 1989 FA Cup semi-final with Nottingham Forest.

Each of the supporters who died as a result of the disaster had also been awarded the Freedom of the City of Liverpool back in September 2016.

Liverpool Lord Mayor, Councillor Mary Rasmussen, led Tuesday's ceremony that paid tribute to Andrew and the love and support his family gave him.

In attendance were Sir Kenny Dalglish and Liverpool FC chaplain Bill Bygroves, along with the screenwriter Jimmy McGovern, who was also granted Freedom status in March for his contribution to TV – which includes an award-winning programme about Hillsborough.

Following the ceremony, Andrew's family were shown the recently inscribed Freedom of Liverpool plaques that honour those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
