NewsAmber Whiteley column: Learning from Arsenal loss, Aston Villa test and Cornelia Kapocs
In her latest column, Liverpool FC Women interim head coach Amber Whiteley reflects on the defeat at Arsenal and looks forward to Sunday's home meeting with Aston Villa.
While we don't like losing games, we have to acknowledge that Arsenal played very well on the day.
Credit to them because they were at their best on Saturday and they didn't give us a minute, with or without the ball, so it was a difficult one for us.
A disappointing result but one we will learn from and hopefully put into practice against Aston Villa on Sunday.
I've watched the game back and I actually thought we defended quite well for large parts of the game. But if you switch off in moments against Arsenal when they are in that sort of mood, you are punished for it and that's what happened.
I felt for Jas [Jasmine Matthews] with the two own goals because she has been brilliant for us in recent weeks. She has great character and I have no doubt she will take the learnings from the game and move forward quickly.
I always say we don't get too high with the highs or too low with the lows. It's really important you stay level-headed in this game.
We are playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and playing against some of the best teams out there, so it's really important – win or lose – we reflect, learn and we go again for the next one.
We return to St Helens Stadium on Sunday when we host Aston Villa and we can't wait to see our fans there again (kick-off 2pm BST).
Obviously Villa are at the opposite end of the table and fighting for every single point they can get, so it will be a completely different challenge for us on Sunday and one we absolutely need to be ready for.
For us, we don't underestimate any team we are up against. Rule No.1 is you pay respect to every opponent you come up against, and you do that with good preparation and hard work.
It feels like a lifetime since we've been at St Helens with all the away games and Anfield, so I'm really looking forward to going back there in front of our home fans.
It makes such a huge difference when we have the fans out in numbers and in good voice, getting behind us, and it just gives us that extra push we need to get the results we want over the line.
Kappy [Cornelia Kapocs] has been back in the team recently and I have been really pleased with her.
Her work-rate is fantastic, she gives absolutely everything every time she steps foot onto the pitch and she always wants to learn and get better.
The fans recognise that hard work and they have got right behind her. Deservedly so!
Thank you for your continued support as always.
YNWA,
Amber
