He played a starring role in Argentina's World Cup win. Having been left out of their tournament-opening defeat by Saudi Arabia, Mac Allister was then ever-present in La Albiceleste's starting XI for the remainder. He netted a crucial goal against Poland to help secure a last-16 spot and then registered an assist in the incredible final with France. "On the pitch, winning the World Cup has made me a more confident player," he said to the Daily Mail. "Even the opposition see you differently. It's been amazing. You get more recognised when you play and people pay you more attention."
He was a nominee for Premier League Young Player of the Season in 2022-23. Mac Allister played 35 times in the competition and had 12 goal involvements (10 goals, two assists) as he was a key figure in Brighton securing European football for the first time in their history. He leaves the Seagulls having made 112 appearances in all competitions, scored 20 goals and produced nine assists.

He's a versatile option in midfield. Mac Allister has operated in a number of different roles for club and country in his career so far. He's shown the disciplined side to his game with anchoring, ball-winning responsibilities with Brighton, particularly under Graham Potter. Roberto De Zerbi used him in a similar way but also tried him out closer to the opposition's goal – similar to where he plays with Lionel Scaloni's Argentina. "Alexis can play anywhere on the pitch," De Zerbi said.
His surname comes from Irish roots. Born in Santa Rosa, the 24-year-old's family ancestry can be traced back to the Republic of Ireland. "According to our family, we came from Ireland, rather than Scotland," his dad Carlos told The Athletic in July 2020. "We came to Argentina, to a place called Pergamino, but that was three or four generations ago, and later my father and mother married and moved to a different place – Santa Rosa in the Province of La Pampa, which is where Alexis was born."
He comes from a footballing family. The apples don't fall far from the tree, as they say. Father Carlos was a teammate of Diego Maradona with Boca Juniors and Argentina, while Alexis' two older brothers, Kevin and Francis, currently play for Argentinos Juniors and Rosario Central respectively. The three siblings played together at Argentinos Juniors.
His footballing journey began at a prestigious academy. Aged five, he joined Club Social Parque, a famous set-up in Buenos Aires. Maradona, Carlos Tevez, Esteban Cambiasso and Juan Roman Riquelme are among some of its alumni. "I was a child but I learned a lot," Mac Allister said of his time there. "We trained twice a week and they gave us the love for football." From there, he would join the youth ranks at Argentinos Juniors and progress through to the first team.
He became a Brighton player in January 2019. Mac Allister completed a transfer to English football partway through 2018-19, before being loaned back to Argentinos Juniors for the remainder of that season. He spent the first half of the 2019-20 campaign at Boca Juniors and was then recalled to kickstart his Seagulls career.
He was Brighton's first-choice penalty taker last season. Mac Allister has scored eight of his nine attempts from the spot while in England, with his most recent conversion coming in the 99th minute against Manchester United in May.
He will be the seventh Argentinian to play for Liverpool, and the first to not be signed by Rafael Benitez. Mac Allister will follow in the footsteps of his compatriots Maxi Rodriguez, Javier Mascherano, Emiliano Insua, Mauricio Pellegrino, Gabriel Paletta and Sebastian Leto.
