Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late goal ensured Jürgen Klopp’s side left Etihad Stadium with a hard-earned point, as the No.66’s first strike of the season cancelled out Erling Haaland’s first-half finish.

The result leaves the Reds within a point of Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions and two shy of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, with more than a third of the campaign now played.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com post-match, Mac Allister said: “I think it was a very tough game of course, what we expected.

“They are a very good team but I think it’s a fair result for both teams. They had most of the possession maybe but they didn’t have many chances and I think it’s a fair result.”

On the lunchtime kick-off coming so soon after the international break, he added: “It’s very tough [with] jet lag, a long trip, but it is what it is. We like playing football and we want to win and that’s why we did our best.”

During his own post-match assessment, Klopp described the need Liverpool had to change and improve their first-half performance after the interval – and praised the team for doing so.

And Mac Allister echoed that sentiment, explaining: “I think they are really good. You can see their ideas but our passing was very good as well.

“In the first half maybe we didn’t defend as well as we can but in the second half we were much better, [with] more challenges, and that was important to get the ball and then score ourselves.”

Alexander-Arnold’s 80th-minute equaliser means the Reds have now recouped 12 points from losing positions in the Premier League so far this term.

Klopp’s charges move on to back-to-back home fixtures in the coming week, with the visit of LASK in the Europa League followed by a league clash with Fulham.

Mac Allister was asked what the Reds can take forward from the display and outcome versus City.

“It’s very important because it’s a tough team, tough stadium [to play at],” replied the No.10. “But we always say we have to go step by step, game by game, and then at the end we will see what the season brings.”
