Liverpool FC legend Alan Hansen has been awarded an MBE for services to football and broadcasting.

The former Reds, Partick Thistle and Scotland defender was acknowledged in the New Year Honours List announced this evening.

Hansen arrived at Anfield from Partick in 1977 and went on to play 620 games for the club amid an era of incredible success at home and in Europe.

His remarkable collection of honours across 14 years with Liverpool included eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, three League Cups and a European Super Cup.

A stylish and assured centre-back considered among the very best of his generation, ‘Jocky’ was later appointed Reds captain and skippered the team on 195 occasions.

He totalled 26 senior international caps for his country and represented Scotland at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

A widely respected voice in the game as a pundit following his retirement from playing in 1991, Hansen, 69, recently overcame a spell in hospital with a serious illness.
