Preview11 Reds set for quarter-finals at Copa America and Euro 2024

Here is the state of play in each tournament ahead of the last-eight ties getting under way (all times UK)...

Copa America

Alexis Mac Allister will be in action first, with Copa holders Argentina taking on Ecuador in a tie that will take place in Houston in the early hours of Friday morning.

World champions Argentina breezed through Group A, winning all three of their fixtures while scoring five goals and conceding none. Mac Allister started their two opening games – victories over Canada and Chile respectively – before being rested for their pool-stage finale against Peru.

Colombia and Luis Diaz will meet Panama in a quarter-final that kicks off at 11pm on Saturday night in Glendale.

Diaz started all three of his country’s matches in Group D and scored the opener from the penalty spot in the 3-0 win over Costa Rica.

Colombia topped that pool above Brazil – the sides drew 1-1 in their final group outing – and could be set for a reunion with Alisson Becker’s team in the semi-finals.

That is because the winners of Colombia’s tie will meet the victors of Brazil against Darwin Nunez’s Uruguay, who clash in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday.

Alisson played in all three of Brazil’s Group D games, from which the Selacao collected five points to finish second behind Colombia.

Nunez, meanwhile, scored twice in three appearances as Uruguay beat Panama, Bolivia and hosts USA to progress as Group C winners.

Euro 2024

Two Reds will also meet in the quarter-finals of the European Championship, with Diogo Jota’s Portugal to take on Ibrahima Konate and France in Hamburg on Friday (8pm kick-off).

Jota has appeared as a substitute in three of Portugal’s four games at the tournament so far, most recently coming on midway through the second half of their penalty shootout victory over Slovakia in the Round of 16.

Konate, meanwhile, is awaiting his first appearance of Euro 2024 for France, who finished second in Group D before beating Belgium 1-0 in the first knockout stage.

Next up, on Saturday (5pm kick-off), is England versus Switzerland in Dusseldorf.

Trent Alexander-Arnold started the Three Lions’ first two Group C fixtures then appeared as a substitute in a 0-0 draw with Slovenia, but remained on the bench throughout as Slovakia were beaten 2-1 after extra-time in the last 16. Joe Gomez is yet to make an appearance for England.

Finally, the Netherlands – featuring Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk – will complete the quarter-finals when they take on Turkiye in Berlin (8pm on Saturday).

Gakpo goes into the tie in joint-pole position to win the Golden Boot, with the Liverpool forward having scored three goals in four appearances so far.

Van Dijk captained Oranje in each of their four games leading up to this point, but Gravenberch has not yet played in the tournament.

Should England and the Netherlands both advance, they will play each other in the semi-finals in Dortmund on July 10.
