Full Time

Mainz 4-0 Liverpool

A tough afternoon for Klopp's charges on his return to Mainz, with the travellers outdone by two goals in each half from the home side at the Opel Arena.

83

Today's attendance has been confirmed as 31,600.

80

Ings has the ball in the net as it richochets off him on the byline from Wijnaldum's blast and loops in. Everybody accepts the subsequent offside call but a replay suggests the striker may actually have been onside.

74

Goal

Mainz 4-0 Liverpool - Muto

The home side find the net again, this time through a close-range header from Muto following a near-post cross from the right flank.

73

Substitution

Firmino and Wijnaldum replace Origi and Henderson.

61

Substitution

Hart replaces Moreno at left-back.

59

Goal

Mainz 3-0 Liverpool - Malli

The deficit increases for Klopp's men. Mainz break away and Malli carries the ball to the edge of the box before smacking an excellent shot past the reach of Manninger into the bottom left corner.

Match shot

Origi battles for the ball at the Opel Arena.

50

Mainz should really have a third as they steal the ball from Stewart and launch a counter-attack. It's eventually played to Clemens in space on the right but he dwells too long and sees his shot blocked by the recovering Wisdom.

Kick-Off

Second half underway

And the game resumes in Germany.

Substitution

Brannagan, GomesRandall and Stewart on for Liverpool at the start of the second half.

Alexander-Arnold, CanLallana and Woodburn are the players off.

Half Time

Mainz 2-0 Liverpool

And that's brought the interval at the Opel Arena. Work for Liverpool to do in the second half.

45

Goal

Mainz 2-0 Liverpool - Cordoba

The Bundesliga team are two up thanks to a clinical piece of play from Cordoba, who dribbled away from Wisdom and Matip and fired inside the near post from the left channel.

39

Substitution

Grujic can't continue, sadly, and the midfielder is replaced by Ings.

32

Clemens threatens to double the lead for Mainz by lifting the ball over Moreno and moving into the area, but his effort on the bounce drifts wide of the far post.

28

A lull in play here as Grujic receives treatment for an ankle issue. The midfielder is up and walking again, however, and seems fine to continue.

The gaffer will be very glad to see the Serb back on his feet.

25

The Reds - actually playing in their recently-released third kit today - have been given a tough test so far this afternoon, with Mainz doing Klopp no favours on his return.

15

Goal

Mainz 1-0 Liverpool - Brosinski

And Brosinski steps up to strike from 12 yards, calmly rolling low to his left as Manninger dives in the opposite direction. The hosts are in front.

14

Penalty

The home side are awarded a spot-kick for an alleged handball by Wisdom. It looks harsh on the defender, who slid in to stop Rodriguez's cross from the byline.

9

An important intervention by Matip there as Mainz clipped in a cross from the left towards the waiting Cordoba. The summer signing is in the perfect position to nod away the danger.

3

Now Emre Can is left frustrated as Rodriguez brings him down before he can surge into open space in Mainz territory. Free-kick, though...

... but it's into the wall from Henderson.

2

Moreno apologetic as a mistimed challenge on Serdar is rightly penalised.

Kick-Off

Mainz get the game underway at the Opel Arena. Come on, Liverpool!

Loris Karius has just been introduced to the crowd at the Opel Arena and has been presented with a gift from Mainz on his return to his former club.

Naturally, the welcome he receives is superb, with the home supporters even chanting his name.

Emre Can's name is read out at the Opel Arena and is given an incredible reception from the home supporters.

But the loudest cheer is, of course, saved for Jürgen Klopp.

Here’s that teamsheet in full…

Manninger, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Wisdom, Moreno, Henderson, Can, Grujic, Woodburn, Lallana, Origi.

Subs: Mignolet, Clyne, Wijnaldum, Lovren, Coutinho,  Firmino, Klavan, Mane, Gomes, Brannagan, Ings, Hart, Stewart, Maguire, Markovic, Randall, Kelleher.

Team news

So, the team news is in and as expected, Liverpool are much changed from the side deployed against Barcelona less than 24 hours ago. Indeed, only Emre Can and Adam Lallana retain their places in the starting XI.

Joel Matip returns to the line-up after an ankle problem, while there are also berths for Divock Origi, Jordan Henderson and Marko Grujic.

Weather

Here we go, then. We know you've been waiting all day for this.

So, it's a hot and sunny day in Mainz. Scorching infact. Temperatures are around 26 degrees and no changes are expected.

So bring your suncream if you're coming to the Opel Arena.

Klopp returns to Mainz

Yes, an emotional day surely ahead for Jürgen Klopp, who gave 11 years' playing service to Mainz before becoming the club's manager in 2001. During his seven-season spell at the helm, he led them to an historic first promotion to the Bundesliga.

No surprise, then, that there have been fond words spoken of Klopp already ahead of today's game.
