Terry McDermott was the complete midfield player, with an unstoppable engine aligned to goalscoring instincts allowing the Scouser to excel for Liverpool during a period of unprecedented success at Anfield.

The boyhood Reds supporter started his professional career with Bury and impressed against Liverpool for Newcastle United in the 1974 FA Cup final.

By the end of the year, he had been signed by Bob Paisley.

McDermott's path to Liverpool greatness was a slow one, though - the midfielder made just 25 appearances in his first two campaigns. Although a move away seemed possible, his patience was rewarded handsomely.

Trusted with a starting berth on a regular basis throughout 1976-77, he grasped his chance; he ended the season with a league winner's medal and scored the first goal in the final as Paisley's Reds were crowned European champions after beating Borussia Monchengladbach.

Hitting the back of the net was a habit McDermott developed further with each passing year. In his final three seasons with Liverpool, the England international notched an outstanding 58 goals from midfield.

Often his strikes were spectacular too; his highlights package includes an audacious FA Cup chip past Everton, the seventh in a September 1978 thrashing of Tottenham, and an incredible touch and volley against Spurs two years later.

McDermott started both the 1978 and 1981 European Cup finals - in the latter season he featured in 60 matches as the Reds secured two trophies. His tactical discipline, passing range and energy were all important.

Celebrating his 30th birthday midway through the 1981-82 campaign could not stop the Kirkby native from adding a fourth First Division title and a second League Cup medal to his collection.

With younger players challenging his supremacy at Anfield, the club and the midfielder ended a mutually beneficial relationship in 1982 as McDermott sealed a return to Newcastle.
