The Irishman's path to Anfield was highly unorthodox for the time - he maintained primary focus on completing his academic studies while learning his football trade at non-league Skelmersdale United until 1970.

Making the jump to the top flight proved a breeze for him, though, and, after being called upon following an injury to Bobby Graham, the wide man played 49 matches in his debut campaign.

It was the beginning of a decade of constant success for Heighway and Liverpool.

His style of wing play was phenomenally direct, attempting to find the shortest route to goal for either himself or a teammate; that Heighway was composed enough to strike 76 times for the club was an added bonus.

One of those goals was notched in the 1971 FA Cup final defeat by Arsenal. No matter, Heighway collected his first major honours two years later with championship and UEFA Cup winner's medals.

The Reds returned to Wembley for the 1974 FA Cup showpiece and Heighway registered his name on the scoresheet once more - and on this occasion Bill Shankly's side were victorious, downing Newcastle United 3-0.

Three more league titles before the end of the decade increased his trophy haul and the Republic of Ireland international started both legs again as the Reds lifted the UEFA Cup a second time in 1976.

Having adapted into a more central position as the years passed, Heighway was in the starting XI in Rome when Bob Paisley masterminded the club's first taste of European Cup glory, and appeared as a substitute when the trophy was retained 12 months on.

As the decade concluded, the midfielder's playing time steadily decreased - so, with almost 500 appearances for the club to his name, his days of running down the wing for the Anfield faithful were brought to an end.
