Steve Harkness was a left-sided defender who was signed for Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish from Carlisle United.

He made his first-team breakthrough under Graeme Souness, who once labelled him as "a man you would like in the trenches with you".

Harkness asked to be transferred in the 1994-95 season but an injury crisis meant he got his chance for the Reds and he was first-choice for the opening half of the 1995-96 campaign, playing as a left wing-back in Roy Evans' 3-5-2 formation.

However, he got suspended for receiving too many bookings and that cost him his place.

After making another return to the starting line-up, he broke his leg after an hour's play against Coventry City on April 6, 1996 and his next game would be 11 months later.

Harkness featured regularly again in 1997-98 but became one of the first players Gerard Houllier sold as manager, reuniting with Souness at Benfica.
