Liverpool have been fortunate to employ a number of magnificent goalkeepers throughout the club's history but none have managed to either match or surpass the achievements of Ray Clemence.
A reliable presence behind an already formidable Reds defence, the Englishman's perfect instincts and supreme shot-stopping established him as arguably the finest in his position anywhere in the world during the 1970s.
Having made his debut for the club in September 1968, Clemence took the gloves permanently from Tommy Lawrence at the outset of the 1970-71 campaign. In the 11 seasons that followed, he missed only six league fixtures.
The 1972-73 season brought the 'keeper's first trophy success at Anfield as the league championship and UEFA Cup started his medal collection. An outstanding reflex penalty save against Dynamo Dresden in the latter competition showed early evidence of his outstanding ability.
With the Reds dominant at home and abroad throughout that decade, at times 'Clem' was a bystander in matches - but his concentration was absolute and ensured that the Liverpool goal was rarely breached on the odd occasion that an opponent broke through.
He won four more First Division titles, an FA Cup and another UEFA Cup before the end of the decade, and formed part of the Bob Paisley team that conquered Europe in consecutive seasons in 1977 and 1978.
Clemence also contributed to a Liverpool record in the 1978-79 season that is unlikely to ever be beaten; with him featuring in every single one of the Reds' 42 league matches, the side conceded just 16 goals.
Before leaving Anfield, the custodian played 665 times, with his final appearance for the Reds the 1981 European Cup final, when he kept out Spanish giants Real Madrid to add a third continental success to the League Cup lifted earlier in the season.
After a decade of bewildering consistency and glory between the Liverpool posts, Clemence signalled his intention to leave for Tottenham Hotspur during the summer of 1981. His statistics will stand the test of time with ease.
