Many Liverpool fans got the shock of a lifetime when Michael Thomas, the former Arsenal player who ruined the Reds' title dreams in the most dramatic fashion in May 1989, then joined the club.
Thomas made himself more popular, though, when he scored a tremendous goal in the 1992 FA Cup final versus Sunderland at the end of his first season.
Reds boss Graeme Souness liked his versatility as Thomas was able to play as a right-back, centre-half and in midfield.
Thomas had his fair share of injuries and his career never really took off at Liverpool until in the 1995-96 season, when he showed his worth.
He displayed his box-to-box athleticism and played a holding role in midfield that allowed John Barnes freedom to attack.
However, Thomas' career was on the downturn again after two good seasons and he left to join Souness at Benfica.
