The German debuted for the Reds in September that year and traded duties between the posts in competition with fellow stopper Simon Mignolet for much of 2016-17.

Karius then made 33 starts in the next campaign, including every game from the group stage on as Jürgen Klopp's team embarked upon an exhilarating run to the 2018 Champions League final in Kyiv.

Huge personal and collective disappointment ensued against Real Madrid, however, with Karius committing two costly individual errors as Liverpool were beaten 3-1 that night.

It would prove to be his last appearance for the club. After loan spells with Besiktas and Union Berlin, he departed in the summer of 2022.
