Signed by Bill Shankly for more than £100,000 in November 1970, 'Tosh' wasted little time in impressing the Kop faithful – his first Reds goal was a thundering header in a Merseyside derby comeback.

A powerfully built forward with natural aerial prowess, Toshack could play on the ground too; in addition to scoring almost a century of Liverpool goals, he assisted many more for his teammates and Keegan in particular.

Toshack's maiden season brought only seven strikes, but it would be the only year of his seven at Anfield in which he failed to breach double figures. All that while regularly struggling with a series of niggling injuries.

The Wales international's first honours with the club arrived in 1972-73 in the form of the league championship and the UEFA Cup. Toshack's contribution to the latter triumph has fallen into Anfield folklore.

Shankly originally left him out of his first-leg team to face Borussia Monchengladbach, before rain forced a fortunate abandonment at Anfield; Toshack was reinstated for the replay and terrorised the visitors to help Liverpool eventually succeed on aggregate.

FA Cup glory followed in 1974 – and Toshack created Steve Heighway's Wembley strike past Newcastle United.

The Cardiff native recorded his most productive campaign for the Reds in 1975-76, bagging 23 goals in all competitions and bolstering his medal collection with another title and another UEFA Cup.

Toshack contributed 13 goals as Liverpool neared a remarkable treble during the next season, but injury forced the striker to watch from the stands as his colleagues lifted the league and European Cup.

With his playing time further restricted at the outset of 1977-78, he opted for a return to his homeland and a player-manager role with Swansea City.
