Blasting an unstoppable free-kick beyond Manchester United and contributing to Liverpool's fifth European Cup triumph in Istanbul was always going to cement John Arne Riise's place in Anfield folklore.

The Norwegian left-sider, equally comfortable at both full-back and on the wing, was a regular for the Reds throughout the latter part of Gerard Houllier's reign and much of Rafael Benitez's tenure.

A consistent performer, alert in possession, with an eye for a cross and a thunderous shot packed into his left boot, Riise inspired the chant 'I want to know how you scored that goal' from the Kop.

He had quickly endeared himself to his new fans following a summer arrival from Monaco ahead of 2001-02, helped by a goal in victory at Goodison Park and a rocket of a set-piece that helped the Reds on their way to a handsome home victory over rivals United.

Having scooped the Charity Shield and European Super Cup within weeks of jetting into Merseyside, Riise lifted his next honour with Liverpool in 2003; United were again the victims in the League Cup final at the Millennium Stadium.

The Norway international scored within a minute when the showpiece was played two years later, although the Reds would ultimately lose on this occasion after extra-time against Chelsea. Disappointment would not last long, however.

Riise featured in 15 European ties throughout 2004-05 and created the opening goal for Steven Gerrard as Benitez's side tasted the most unlikely success with a miraculous comeback in the Champions League final. His personal miss in the decisive shootout meant nothing.

He scored in three rounds of the Reds' victorious FA Cup journey during 2006, including another strike past Chelsea in the semi-final at Old Trafford, and swept home a spot-kick in the subsequent penalties victory over West Ham United.

Fabio Aurelio joined Liverpool in 2006 to provide competition for the left-back berth, although Riise nevertheless managed to clock up 92 appearances in the two seasons that followed.

His Anfield career eventually concluded in 2008 when he switched to Serie A outfit Roma.
