A central defender, his opportunities for first-team football were limited because there were a number of other players at the club who could also play in that role.

He made six First Division appearances in 1952-53 and another half-dozen a year later during the first half of what turned out to be the Reds' last season in the top division for eight years.

Maloney joined Shrewsbury Town in July 1954 and made nearly 250 Football League appearances for the Shropshire club, before closing his playing career with brief spells at Port Vale and Crewe Alexandra.
