The southerner was just 17 years old when he became the final signing of Kenny Dalglish's first reign as Liverpool boss; £350,000 changed hands to bring Redknapp from Bournemouth, although he would never get a chance to play for the man who signed him.

Instead Graeme Souness handed him his Reds debut in a UEFA Cup clash at Auxerre in October 1991. He became the youngest player to feature in European competition for the club in the process.

Redknapp was a natural favourite of the Kop faithful given his silky passing skills, long-range shooting and accuracy from set-pieces. His career was undoubtedly on an upward trajectory, even with another change of manager.

The midfielder made a personal record of 55 appearances in all competitions for new boss Roy Evans during the 1994-95 season and claimed a League Cup winner's medal to add to his 1992 FA Cup honour.

England recognition followed and Redknapp represented his country at Euro 96 on home turf but the injury issues that so cruelly maligned his career were just around the corner; he missed out on both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.

Such was his influence around the club, he was named Liverpool skipper at the outset of the 1999-2000 campaign but a troublesome knee injury restricted his appearances to a disappointing 23.

As Gerard Houllier guided his team to an unprecedented cup treble of FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup the next season, Redknapp was seeking a solution to his problems in America. He was present to help Robbie Fowler lift the FA Cup in Cardiff, though – an emotional gesture.

He launched yet another comeback in time for 2001-02 and scored at Charlton Athletic in what would prove to be his last ever start for Liverpool. He left in April 2002 to join Tottenham Hotspur.
