Hysen was Man of the Match on his Reds debut in the 1989 Charity Shield against Arsenal at Wembley.

He went on to have an excellent first season and was an important member of the championship-winning squad of 1989-90.

However, his cool and calculated performances were not as frequent in the following campaign as he made a further 32 appearances in the First Division.

When Graeme Souness replaced Kenny Dalglish as manager in the spring of 1991, it was clear the new boss and the Swede did not see eye to eye.

Souness picked Hysen only five times from the start in 1991-92, with two further appearances coming as a substitute, and in 1992 Hysen returned to Sweden and signed for GAIS.
