Goalkeeper Frank Lane was signed by Liverpool from Merseyside neighbours Tranmere Rovers in September 1971 as cover for Ray Clemence.

Injury to the club's first-choice custodian meant Lane was thrown in at the deep end for his league debut at Derby County on September 2, 1972.

He kept his place for the League Cup tie at Carlisle United three days later, but never played a senior match for the club again.

Lane was on the bench for both legs of the Reds' UEFA Cup final victory over Borussia Monchengladbach in May 1973, though.

After a long period of reserve-team football he was eventually transferred to Notts County in July 1975.
