Terry McDermott’s first-half finish was cancelled out by Allan Simonsen soon after the interval, but Tommy Smith’s header and a Phil Neal penalty gave Kopites a cherished moment.

Paisley’s men successfully defended the trophy the following year, with a deft chip from Kenny Dalglish the difference between Liverpool and Club Brugge when they faced off at Wembley on May 10, 1978.

After successive first-round eliminations, the glittering cup was then brought back to Anfield for a third time on May 27, 1981, once more under Paisley.

This time, Paris was the location and Real Madrid the opponents, though a 1-0 scoreline proved enough again – Alan Kennedy bounding forward from left-back and firing into the net to put Liverpool back on top of the continent.

During a period of huge dominance at home and abroad, the Reds – by now under the charge of Joe Fagan – made it a fourth European Cup victory in eight seasons on May 30, 1984.

This was, perhaps, their greatest feat yet.

Standing in their way were AS Roma, who would have home advantage with the final being played at the Italian club’s own Stadio Olimpico.

Neal and Roberto Pruzzo traded goals in the first half but the remainder passed scoreless, meaning a penalty shootout in which the visitors prevailed 4-2 – with Kennedy again providing the clinching kick.

It would be 21 years before Liverpool could again call themselves kings of Europe, with the competition having since been reformatted and renamed the Champions League.

The glory overseen on May 25, 2005 by Rafael Benitez was, in so many ways, the most unlikely of the club’s half-a-dozen titles.

Not only did it come in Benitez’s first season in charge of the team, but it was achieved despite trailing 3-0 to AC Milan after just 45 minutes of the final in Istanbul.

A miraculous turnaround saw captain Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso each score within the space of six second-half minutes, and the Reds went on to win a penalty shootout 3-2.

No.6 was lifted in the heat of Madrid on June 1, 2019 as Jürgen Klopp’s vintage team etched their name into the history books.

Having reached the decider by delivering a sensational Anfield comeback from three goals down on aggregate to defeat Barcelona 4-0 in the semi-final, Mohamed Salah’s second-minute penalty gave Liverpool a lead over Tottenham Hotspur at Estadio Metropolitano.

And their triumph was sealed in the closing stages as Divock Origi swiped in a low finish.
