Those who had the privilege to watch goalkeeper Elisha Scott in the flesh insist the Northern Irishman was the greatest Liverpool stopper, possibly the world's best, to ever play the game.

The story of Scott's genius has passed into Anfield folklore despite limited archive footage and images from his 22-year spell with the club, which included back-to-back league championships during the 1920s.

Scott made his debut for the Reds on New Year's Day 1913, keeping a clean sheet in a goalless stalemate at Newcastle United. The Magpies were so impressed by the visiting custodian that they instantly offered £1,000 for his services; the offer was wisely rejected.

The First World War interrupted Scott's career progression but when conflict concluded and football resumed, he donned the gloves permanently. Double league honours were just on the horizon, too.

Incredibly agile and capable of making reflex saves, he quickly became famous for marshalling the defenders in front of him with a unique style – the stopper's to-the-point language could most accurately be described as 'industrial'.

With him between the posts Liverpool conceded only 36 goals throughout 1921-22 to claim the third league title in the club's history. The No.1 was named in the starting line-up in all but three fixtures.

Ever the perfectionist, Scott managed to improve even further the following season. The Reds successfully defended their championship, conceding a miserly 31 times on this occasion as he played in every single match.

Neither the 'keeper's brilliance nor popularity dipped during another decade at Anfield, although the club failed to win the further honours that his talent undoubtedly deserved.

After making his 468th and final appearance for the Reds against Chelsea in February 1934, Scott said an emotional farewell to his thousands of supporters before accepting a player-manager position with Belfast Celtic.
