They shared the trophy in 1964 and 1965, with West Ham United and Manchester United respectively, after draws in English football's annual curtain-raiser.

The club's first outright victory arrived on August 13, 1966 when Roger Hunt's early goal downed Everton at Goodison Park.

After sharing it with Everton in 1986, the Reds beat Wimbledon in 1988 and Arsenal in 1989, before drawing with Manchester United once more in 1990.

There would be an 11-year wait for Liverpool's next triumph, when Gerard Houllier's treble winners defeated United 2-1 in Cardiff in 2001.

Rafael Benitez then guided his team to victory in the 2006 edition, with goals from John Arne Riise and Peter Crouch beating Chelsea 2-1.

Jürgen Klopp's Reds qualified for the occasion in 2019 and 2020 but were beaten on penalties both times, by Manchester City and then Arsenal.

However, the German boss finally got his hands on the shield on July 30, 2022 at Leicester City's King Power Stadium. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez were on the scoresheet to defeat City and take the club's haul to 16.
