Alan Kennedy had a helpful knack of scoring in important matches, not least the winning goals he notched for Liverpool in the 1981 and 1984 European Cup finals.

Brought to Anfield from Newcastle United by Bob Paisley to solve the Reds' dilemma at left-back, the defender raised his game by several levels on Merseyside to become an established and crucial figure.

Kennedy was a player you could rely on, a player who offered 100 per cent every time he pulled on a Liverpool shirt; the man from Sunderland also thrived on overlapping to support attacks down the left-hand side.

He collected championship honours in each of his first two seasons with the Reds before injury threatened to derail his progress in 1980-81. Actually, nothing could have been further from the truth.

The full-back struck in the League Cup final of that year and completed the subsequent replay victory over West Ham United. Exactly eight weeks later in Paris, he blasted an effort into the near post for the only goal of the European Cup final against Real Madrid.

To continue a recurring theme, Kennedy scored in the League Cup showpiece of 1983 in which Paisley's men downed Manchester United. By the end of the 1983-84 campaign, he had five league winner's medals and four League Cups in his collection.

He was one of four Liverpool players to participate in every game of that historic treble season – 67 in total. The second defining moment of his professional career occurred in the 67th and final fixture.

With 120 minutes of action unable to split the Reds and hosts Roma in the 1984 European Cup final, penalties were required; Kennedy took Liverpool's fifth spot-kick with the chance to secure glory. He buried the attempt into the corner to prompt mass celebrations.

The popular character racked up a further 49 appearances during the season that followed but his previously assured place was under threat from Jim Beglin and 'Barney Rubble' left the club a hero in September 1985.
