Dominik Szoboszlai hopes to make the manner of his goal in Liverpool’s friendly win over Real Betis a regular occurrence in the new season.

The Hungary midfielder provided the decisive moment of the Reds’ 1-0 victory against the Spanish side at Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium.

Driving into the box to meet Mohamed Salah’s smart pass, Szoboszlai carefully guided a low finish across former teammate Adrian.

Post-match, the No.8 spoke to Liverpoolfc.com about his determination to keep contributing in 2024-25, his change of role against Betis and more.

Read a summary of Szoboszlai’s reaction below…

On his goal and the combination with Salah that led to it…

Last year it didn’t happen so often so I just always let him know I’m always ready to [make] these runs. Hopefully you’re going to see me [do that] in the season a couple of times.

On the confidence boost a pre-season goal can give to a midfielder…

Of course it’s always good to score and help the team for the win. I had some individual goals as well, set up to myself, but first of all the team is the most important [thing]. If as a team we are doing well, each player is going to do well.

On the advanced role he was playing alongside Harvey Elliott on the night…

Yeah, it’s a little bit different compared to last year, but we are ready to do everything.

I think that’s the goal we want to do. So, if Harvey drops on one side, I’m going to the middle, and if I’m dropping on the other side, Harvey is coming to the middle. I don’t know if it’s going to be like this in the season but until the manager wants us to do this then probably we’re going to do this.

Against the ball especially, we had to do this job with Harvey like if he goes, I cover his back, and exactly the same in the other way. It’s a lot of running, but [I got the goal].

On the quality of his finish for the goal…

It was a good pass from Trey [Nyoni]. It’s important that the No.6s see us and use us also. And of course, Mo knows how to play these balls.

On Nyoni’s performance after coming off the bench…

I like him a lot, he is a really offensive player. I just said on the bench to [Jarell] Quansah, you can’t even foul him because of his movements and stuff like this. Everybody saw in the second half, Nat [Phillips] was a centre-back but otherwise everybody was young and almost none of them were 20. But they still did a good job, didn’t concede a goal and had chances. So yeah, a good future.
