Liverpool FC Women captain Niamh Fahey has signed a new contract with the club.

The defender, who joined the Reds in the summer of 2018, becomes the second Republic of Ireland international to commit their future to Liverpool this week, after striker Leanne Kiernan did likewise on Monday.

“It’s fantastic. I’m absolutely delighted to have another season in red. I really enjoy my time here with the club and after a brilliant last season I’m looking forward to pushing on with the rest of the club,” Fahey told Liverpoolfc.com after putting pen to paper at the AXA Melwood Training Centre.

“It’s special for me to have the Liver bird on my chest. It’s still very much surreal because I absolutely love this club. Getting to play in this shirt is something I don’t take for granted, so I’m absolutely delighted to have another year in red.”

Fahey has accumulated more than 100 international caps for Ireland and, at the age of 36, is also planning for the next stage of her career.

While continuing to play remains the priority in the immediate future, Fahey is working towards gaining her UEFA B Licence and will explore opportunities to gain coaching experience alongside manager Matt Beard and his staff during the 2024-25 season.

She added: “I’m preparing for a little bit of life after football… It’s an exciting time for me as well because I’m at that transition period.

“The offer to do some coaching, Beardy spoke with me and I’m so grateful for this opportunity to learn off everyone and get my ideas as well how things work off the pitch.”

After beginning her playing career in her native Ireland, Fahey moved to England in 2008 and enjoyed successful spells with Arsenal and Chelsea, winning five top-flight titles, five Women’s FA Cups and three Women’s League Cups during her time with the London clubs.

She left Chelsea to spend the 2017-18 season with Bordeaux in France before fulfilling a lifelong dream by signing for Liverpool.

Fahey was appointed club captain two years after her arrival and skippered the team to the FA Women’s Championship title in 2021-22. She made eight Barclays Women’s Super League appearances last season as Beard’s side claimed a fourth-placed finish.
