The LFC Foundation work closely with refugees across the Liverpool City Region, providing weekly football sessions to integrate them in the community, make new friends and to take part in a common interest – football.

This season, we have worked with over 630 refugees and asylum seekers, delivering sessions in Anfield, Wavetree, Speke, Kirkby, Haydock and Birkenhead. On a weekly basis, we see over 100 participants come to our sessions.

As part of our ongoing commitment to working with refugees in the local area and supporting them, the Foundation Inclusion team recently held a football tournament at our base at Anfield Sports and Community Centre. We welcomed over 80 refugees from clubs such as Salford, Leeds, Everton, Shrewsbury Burnley to join together to create a fun and full day of football, with some great skills and camaraderie on display.

The overall winners were Leeds, who beat a valiant LFC Activate team in the final.

Liam Gerrard, Inclusion Sports Coach at The Foundation said,

‘We use everyone’s mutual love of football to provide a safe environment for refugees and asylum seekers to come together and engage in physical activity but more importantly a space where they can socialise and meet similar people in what can be a really isolated lifestyle.’

A participant of one of our Refugee and Asylum Seeker sessions said,

‘I have been coming to the session for the last 10 months as it allows us to practice the sport that we love, and it keeps us healthy. The session means a lot to me because it’s good for our mental health and keeps us in touch with different people and communities.’
