Express: Reds join Zarate chase

Liverpool are in the race to sign Lazio forward Mauro Zarate.

The 25-year-old Argentine has been on the fringes of the Lazio first team this season, managing only one Serie A appearance.

Zarate is known to English football fans, having enjoyed a successful loan spell at Birmingham in 2008.

But Liverpool have a battle on their hands, with Sunderland and Stoke believed to be keen on him too.

Sunderland in particular are looking to add more firepower up front, and appear to be closing in on a move for Swansea City's Danny Graham.

And Lazio could well part company with Zarate, as they want to free up funds and space in their squad.

Zarate is yet to get off the mark for Lazio this season.

If we buy him then this is the last straw. We will turn into a mid table team if we buy anymore mediocre players.
